Aleksei Gritsai (1914-1998), one of the most famous and exceptional academic painters of post war Russia, Gritsai is a legendary artist at the highest level within the canon of postwar Russian artists. His work is in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg and many other important Russian museums. His work is notable for its lyric, sensitive color and his belief that a lanscape is mainly an "original" portrait of a human soul. Like many of his colleagues, Gritsai worked at the Academic Dacha in the Tver. His colleagues and peers included Valentin Sidorov, Alexei and Sergei Tkachev, Nikolai Romadin, and Vladimir Stozharov.
