Bates Wilson – New Work
The surfboard continues to define a uniquely American culture. Returning to what is arguably his most powerful and inspired work sculptor Bates Wilson has created five new surfboard sculptures from recycled materials.
Surf culture defines a certain brand of American individualism born in Southern California in the nineteen sixties. Combining the mythic idea of the California lifestyle with the freedom of the surfer, these boards incorporate exhaust manifolds, stick shifts and nameplates from classic American cars to create a perfect fusion of Americana that resonate with young and old, collector or casual viewer. Like these boards, sculptor Bates Wilson is an American original destined to become a classic.
